UK Dementia Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Cambridge, Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Cambridge Biomedical Campus
The mission of the UK DRI at the University of Cambridge is to create a collaborative, inter-disciplinary Centre, combining world-leading expertise unique to Cambridge from chemistry, biophysics and structural biology with internationally leading research in the cell biology of neurodegeneration. This environment will enable creative and innovative approaches to the study of neurodegenerative disease and drive a gear change in our scientific understanding. Our focus is on understanding the processes involved in the earliest stages of neurodegenerative disease in order to deliver therapeutic targets with the greatest potential to prevent dementia. Three foundation programmes from established leaders (see below) include cross-disciplinary approaches addressing mechanisms of early disease and protective strategies, and will create early scientific and translational momentum for the Centre, as well as a focus for recruitment of talented researchers.

Positions will be available for independent scientists to lead a programme of research in a field relevant to the cell biology of neurodegeneration in the UK DRI at the University of Cambridge, which is led by Professor Giovanna Mallucci. Depending on experience, individuals may be appointed as a DRI Programme Leader / DRI Fellow for 5 years. The University of Cambridge will appoint the post holder to a research position at the level appropriate to the career stage of the successful applicant.
We are seeking expressions of interest for UK DRI Programme Leader / UK DRI Fellow positions with the salary range from Grade 9 to Grade 12.
Non-clinical £39,324 pa to £120,584 pa depending on experience
Clinical £76,001 pa to £102,465 pa depending on seniority
Successful applicants will have relevant expertise and an interest in addressing fundamental questions in neurodegeneration. In particular, the fields of proteostasis, translational control at the synapse, myelin/axon interactions in neuronal health and disease and the biomechanics of brain ageing, all of which are particularly suited to this cross-disciplinary environment are areas we are keen to expand.
Researchers (~60) will be housed in the new Centre, in 876m2 of newly refurbished laboratory space in the Island Research Building at the heart of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, co-located with the Cambridge Alzheimer’s Research UK Drug Discovery Institute (AR-UK DDI). This will include investigators from Clinical Neurosciences and from Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, providing on-site biophysical capabilities and state-of-the-art super-resolution microscopes, enabling interaction and driving further collaborative growth. The Centre is situated in one of the world’s most vibrant centres of biomedical research, which includes the University of Cambridge’s Clinical School, two major hospitals, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, and the world headquarters of Astra Zeneca.
